Abstract

Citizens of the future, who live in knowledge-based society, need not only hard skills but also soft skills and appropriate character in order to achieve a successful life. This article reports an ethno­graphic study carried out at the State Islamic Primary School I (Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri I), Malang, East Java. Indonesia. The study is focused on investigating the kind of instructional processes that con­tribute to the improvement of students' interpersonal skills. The main focus is specified into some sub-­focuses which include 1) forms of instructional activities which affect the improvement of the students' interpersonal skills, 2) reasons that induce a teacher to choose a particular course of in­structional action which instigates the improvement of the students' interpersonal skills, 3) supporting factors in the man­agement of instructional activities that contribute to the improvement of the students interpersonal skills, and 4) obstacles which hinder the acquisition of interpersonal skills.
