Abstract

The challenge of biology learning in Indonesia is to increase the scientific literacy of students so that they become successful generation in the 21st century. Generation of the 21st century demanded critical of socioscientific issues and able to solve the social problem using the knowledge of science and biology. The intervention to improve scientific literacy was conducted with socioscientific problem-based learning to stimulate students to identify social problems and solving them with a multidisciplinary approach and teamwork. This research aimed to test the hypothesis that the socioscientific problem-based learning (PBMS) improve the scientific literacy of high school students compared to presentation-discussion (PD) approach. This study uses a quasi experimental approach and nonran domized control group pretest-posttest design. Two classes in SMA Negeri 4 Malang selected randomly as the sample after the test of equality. Class X-F (N=36) as an experimental class with PBMS approach and Class X-G (N=36) as the control group by PD approach. Scientific literacy was measured using Scientific Literacy Test, a multiple choice test with 15 items. The improvement of scientific literacy is determined based on data of pretest and posttest. The difference of scientific literacy improvement between two approach analized by using ANACOVA. The results of the study recommend the use socioscientific problem-based learning in teaching biology to foster scientific literacy in high school students.

Tantangan pembelajaran Biologi di Indonesia adalah meningkatkan literasi saintifik siswa. Peningkatan literasi saintifik dilakukan dengan intervensi pembelajaran berbasis masalah sosiosains (PBMS) merangsang siswa mengidentifikasi permasalahan dan pemecahannya secara multidisiplin dan kerja tim. Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji pengaruh PBMS terhadap peningkatan literasi saintifik siswa SMA melalui pendekatan kuasi eksperimen dengan desain nonrandomized control group pretest-posttest. Dua kelas di SMA Negeri 4 Malang dipilih sebagai sampel penelitian. Literasi saintifik diukur dengan mengunakan Tes Literasi Saintifik, dan dianalisis dengan menggunakan ANAKOVA. Penelitian meng­ungkap bahwa PBMS dapat meningkatkan literasi saintifik siswa.
